Depressive Disorders
The common feature of these disorders is the presence of sad, empty, or irritable mood, accompanied by somatic and cognitive changes that significantly affect the individual’s capacity to function. There are different types of depressive presentations including:
- Major Depressive Disorder which is characterised by low mood and loss if interest in usual activities as well as other symptoms, for most days over a 2 week period. This can be described as melancholic, psychotic, antenatal and postnatal depression,
- Persistent Depressive Disorder in which symptoms of dysthymia are similar to those of major depression but are less severe,
- Seasonal Affective Disorder is a mood disorder that has a seasonal pattern, and
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder in which symptoms occur repeatedly during the pre-menstrual phase of the cycle.
