Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterised by a pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.  There are different presentations of ADHD as follows:

  • Predominately inattentive presentation which manifests behaviourally as wandering off task, lacking persistence, difficulty sustaining focus and being disorganised and not due to defiance or lack of comprehension.
  • Predominately hyperactive/impulsive presentation refers to excessive motor activity, excessive fidgeting, talking or tapping, and extreme restlessness. Impulsiveness may appear as social intrusiveness and/or making decisions without consideration of long term consequences.
  • Combined presentation is characterised by both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.

Multimodal therapy is recommended for the treatment of ADHD including psychosocial management strategies and medication.  A number of our Day Programs are suitable in supporting patients with ADHD including Moving Towards Wellness Day Program and Optimising Your Potential Day Program.
